Thechineseroom is an independent game studio based in Brighten, in the United Kingdom. They are recognized as the developers behind Dear Esther and Korsakovia as well as up and coming games such as Everybody's gone to the rapture and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

Origins

Thechineseroom was originally as a research project for the university of Portsmouth, the goal of the research was to discover new methods of interactive story telling in games. Several mods were developed under this project, the most famous being Dear Esther (2008.)

Dear Esther 2008

Dear Esther (2008) was an unexpected cult hit, which got over 100,000 downloads off of ModDB and was named one of the top 10 spookiest mods on the site (voted for by ModDB members.) By 2009 thechineseroom collaborated with Robert Briscoe to make a remake of the game.

Dear Esther 2012

Dear Esther (2012) was released on the 14th of February 2012 to critical acclaim, it sold over 50,000 units in 1 week.

Other projects

In 2009 thechineseroom also released another mod named Korsakovia according to thechineseroom's website the mod was to " break all the normal design patterns for a game - giving the player false information, having an environment that didn't conform to expectations of architecture or physics, a story that made little or no sense, and enemies that didn't have any human qualities at all, making them impossible to predict."


Unfortunately many players were unable to run Korsakovia due to many crashing problems and with a source update the game became almost unplayable.

Future of thechineseroom

Currently thechineseroom are making a spiritual sequel to Dear Esther named "Everybody's gone to the rapture" and a sequel to Amnesia named "A machine for pigs.
